The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a non-profit organisation for ‘third agers’ i.e. retired people or senior citizens.  The organisation started in France in 1968.  It now has branches in over 36 countries and there are more than 28 independent branches in South Africa including three in the Johannesburg area.

U3A Joburg East meets in the RJM Hall on Randjes Estate, Randjeslaagte Road, Highlands North, Johannesburg (GPS coordinates: 26.14S 28.09E.). Monthly meetings, addressed by experts in their fields, are held from 10h00 to 11h00 on the second Tuesday of each month with the exception of January, July and December. Tea and Coffee are served at 09h30 (cost R5) and the lectures start promptly at 10h00.   Visitors are welcome.  Non-members pay a fee of R25 for attending each lecture.

How to join

To join U3A Joburg East come along to one of our meetings, complete a registration form and pay the R60 annual registration fee. Or, please go to the “About us” section and  look under the drop down menu “How to join” to find the registration form, and other information about us.

Small Group Courses/ Interest Groups

In addition to our monthly lecture programme we have a number of small groups that cater for people with a variety of interests.  These groups meet in private homes or agreed venues under the guidance of a course leader. Membership is open to all U3A Members.  Usually R5 is charged to cover the cost of refreshments although some courses do request a larger fee per session in order to cover costs such as, paper, ink, food, or an honorarium for a speaker.

Most course activities are held during the day.  At U3A learning is for pleasure.  No qualifications are required for admission and none are awarded, as fellowship and love of learning are the focus of the organisation.

U3A Joburg East members are also welcome to participate in other activities at Randjes and Hilson Park.  Please refer to the Programme of Short Courses and Interest Groups.
